Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
Being enlightened. Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians is to see the things which are spiritual and the truth of their existence in God. Paul lists in this verse two blessings they had in Christ; first, the hope of His calling and second, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints. Two truths the Ephesians had not seen of before perhaps, or that Paul felt he needed to emphasize. Question: What are the things we need to see, or have perhaps forgotten? Are we awake enough to see the things of God?
Being enlightened. To be a Christian is to live and understand existence in the spiritual and eternal, to walk with Christ. Examples? We have eternal life. We are seated in heavenly places. We are a member of the body of Christ. We have a mansion in heaven prepared for us. We are new creatures in Christ. We will have a glorified body. Our affection is on things above.
Being enlightened. We have the scriptures. We have the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort. We are washed, sanctified, and justified. We are ambassadors, kings and priests. We are redeemed. We are sons of God. We are of the seed of Abraham. We are called beloved. We are loved. We have a great High Priest in Christ Jesus.
Being enlightened. How often we do not see. The nasty now and now dims our spiritual eyesight and the ability to see God’s purpose. The hustle and bustle of life distracts from our prayers, meditation, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit. The news of the day obstructs the truth of the scriptures and our ability to see Christ. Our failings distort our position within God’s creation. Our self centered focus hampers our ministry to others and therefore we lose opportunities to serve our Savior.
Being enlightened. So much to see! Let us not have our eyes closed to the things of God.
Lord Jesus, may the eyes of our understanding be enlightened!
