Awake Thou That Sleepest

Is it possible for us to be asleep? Paul says so. Sleep in Ephesians 5:14 is likened to death. In death, there is no light. It is easy to understand how the world can be asleep and in darkness, but not so easy to explain how we manage to fall asleep. Paul proclaims; Awake, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give us light!

Are we asleep when it comes to sin? The sin around us? The sin of the brethren?  The sins of ourselves? Like the sins mentioned in chapter 5: fornication, uncleanness, covetousness, filthy and foolish talk, jesting, unfruitful works, works of darkness, and drunkenness? Awake, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give us light!

Are we asleep to the things we should be doing? Like the things mentioned in chapter 5: using our time wisely, submitting ourselves one to another, loving our wives, giving reverence to our husbands. Are we filled with the Spirit?  Awake, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give us light!

The more awake, the more light…

Are we awake enough to see the approaching signs of Christ’s return? Are we so asleep we forget to look? Awake, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give us light!

Are we so mesmerized by daily events and pressing appointments, and deluged by messages both important and unimportant, that we walk most of our day apart from Christ and His light? Awake, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give us light!

The more awake, the more light. The more light, the more holiness, the more understanding, the more growth, and the more fruit.

Let us not be asleep. Let us be awake. When we are awake, Christ gives us light to see sin, to do right, to watch, and to walk in fellowship.  Awake, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give us light!

Lord Jesus, may we awake from our sleep, arise from the dead, and walk in Your light!
